Green Party in Waterford, CT?

Some people haven't heard the news yet, while others are very excited about it: there's a new Green Party movement in Waterford. Most people, however, are wondering, what is the Green Party? What prompted this? Who's doing this? Why stray from the large Democrat and Republican parties?

I'm happy to offer some answers to these questions.

The Waterford, CT Green Party was started this past September (2013), and has been gaining support ever since. They have grown large enough to become an official chapter of the Green Party of Connecticut, and now hold regular monthly meetings at the Waterford Public Library to discuss problems within the community, and possible solutions to those issues.

So, what is the Green Party? The Green Party is often considered to be a group of extreme leftists, progressives, and liberals. In reality, however, the group does not represent the same leftist principles that the Democrats do. In fact, like many conservatives, the Green Party promotes the decentralization of government. Decentralization is one of the Green Party's Ten Key Values, which are a list of ten core beliefs that define the Green Party.

The Green Party's Ten Key Values:
1. Grassroots Democracy
2. Social Justice
3. Ecological Wisdom
4. Non-Violence
5. Decentralization
6. Community-Based Economics
7. Feminism and Gender Equity
8. Diversity
9. Responsibility
10. Future Focus and Sustainability
(Confused about any of these? Don't worry- we'll be posting articles on each Value as time goes on. You can also check out www.gp.org for more info!)

What prompted this? Many residents in Waterford, including myself, are tired of the duopoly between Republicans and Democrats, and we believe that adding more parties will add fresh perspectives on old and new debates alike, and can help lead America to become a nation that's more willing to cooperate with itself. I, as well as my fellow Greens also believe that the Green Party gives special attention to issues that affect the health of the planet, which will become increasingly more important as deforestation and pollution continue and climate change gets worse.
