A Giant Offer For Long

Waterford Standout Drafted By The San Francisco Giants

I guess if your 6 foot, 9 inches tall, it isn’t much of a surprise to be picked by the Giants.

Thursday, the San Francisco Giants selected Waterford High School senior Nolan Long in the 38th round of Major League Baseball’s amateur draft. Long, who also starred for the Waterford High School basketball team , is a 6’9”, 225-pound right-handed pitcher.

But Long has already signed a letter of intent to pitch for the University of Rhode Island in the fall and will most likely stay that course, according to The Day. The goal is to pitch well there, to increase his standing, according to the newspaper.

"Getting drafted in the 38th round is a great thing, but I'm not trying to stop here,” Long told The Day. "I'm going to try to get stronger and also throw harder so that in a few years hopefully I'll be a higher draft pick."

Long was 6-2 this season with a 0.88 ERA, and allowed 28 hits in 42 innings while striking out 46 batters, according to The Day. To watch Long’s scouting video, click here.
