Police Chief: Do Not Treat-or-Treat for Halloween

Chief says the danger is high with downed wires.

A statement from the Town of Waterford:

"In the interest of public safety, Police Chief Murray Pendleton is encouraging all residents to refrain from trick-or-treating for Halloween Wednesday night.

With downed power lines and debris on darkened sidewalks and roadways, children will be at risk of injury."

I'm sure people are curious if there will be some sort of make-up event. Nothing is scheduled yet, but we will keep you informed.

We always take our young children trick-or-treating when it is still light out. Surely that's OK?

My kids are going to be so bummed
jeremy seidel October 30, 2012 at 11:52 PM
Why dont the kids put their costumes on and stay home while parents walk around delivering candy?
Ryan Lewis October 31, 2012 at 01:02 AM
This will kill my kids.
heather wilkinson October 31, 2012 at 01:31 AM
Yes the kids won't be happy. But I would rather them postpone it for another day so all will be safe.

Just called waterford police dept this can not be confirmed that the police chief. Even said this ! They told me to call again weds morning !

I received this statement from the Town of Waterford and confirmed it again with the First Selectman. Perhaps they could not confirm it because the police chief won't be in again until the morning.

The town I teach in, used the school district's global connect to tell families to postpone Trick or Treating until it is safer for all. It was a quick way to communicate and get everybody on the same page.

I wish they'd say when we ARE supposed to go - although it might be nice to be surprised by trick or treaters on any night during the next week.

Why are we waiting for our Town Gov't to select a day - we "the people" should just do it. I suggest everyone just select a day like, Sun. Nov. 11, since the children have a holiday from school the next day - Veterans Day. Let's go for it ... join in - pass the word - Sun. Nov. 11th is Halloween in Waterford.
