Motorists On Ice Yesterday When Champagne Truck Crashed

Corks may have popped but no one was celebrating yesterday when a tractor trailer loaded with champagne collided with a Connecticut DOT truck that was doing road work on I-395 Northbound in Griswold.

The accident happened at about 2:30 p.m. some three quarters of a mile before Exit 84 and closed the highway's northbound lanes between Highway 12/Exit 84 and highway 201/Exit 86 for two hours as police worked to clear the scene. By 4:30 p.m., one lane opened to traffic but it took until about 8 p.m. for all lanes to open.

According to state police, the DOT truck sustained moderate damage but the tractor trailer, which rolled over spilling its contents across the highway, was wrecked. Both the truck driver, William Wronski of Blackstone, Mass., and the DOT truck driver, James Tuttle of North Stonington, were taken to Backus Hospital to be evaluated. Police told Channel 30 that neither man appeared to be seriously injured at the scene.
