Man Found With AK-47

An active member of the United States Navy who lives in town was charged Monday with illegally transporting and possessing an AK-47 assault rifle, according  to a Waterford Police press release.

Cory Dion Caldwell, 24, of 375 Willets Ave, an active member of the Navy assigned to the United States Subase in Groton, was charged with illegal possession of an assault rifle and transporting a prohibited assault rifle. Waterford Police and the Navy Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) handled the investigation.

NCIS initiated the investigation after it received information that Caldwell had illegally transported and possessed the AK-47, according to the release. Waterford Police and NCIS searched Caldwell’s residence and seized the rifle and ammunition for the weapon, along with a 50-caliber handgun and two 45-caliber handguns, according to the release.

Caldwell is from Georgia and is assigned to the USS Springfield, according to the release. He is being held on $200,000 bond and will be arraigned today. The investigation is ongoing by the NCIS and the Waterford Police, according to the release.
