Update: Name Released From Great Neck Road Fatality

Police have released the name of the 82-year-old driver who hit a stone wall Saturday and died. His name was Eugene Cavanaugh, 82, of 229 Ocean Ave, New London.

An 82-year-old man died Saturday after his car hit a stone wall on Great Neck Road, according to Police Lt. Dave Burton.

At 8:19 a.m., Eugene Cavanaugh, of 229 Ocean Ave, was driving north on Great Neck Road, when he veered off the street and into a stone wall at approximately house number 139, according to Burton. The car rolled once, and came to rest on the sidewalk, Burton said.

Waterford police, fire and ambulance personnel rushed to the scene, and extracted Cavanaugh from the vehicle. He was rushed to Lawrence and Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to Burton.

Cavanaugh was driving a green Volkswagen Cabriolet. He was driving alone, Goshen Fire Chief Neil Wiseman said.

Great Neck Road was closed between Lamphere Road and Goshen Road until 10:50 a.m. Saturday, as police investigated, Burton said. The case is still under investigation, and the cause of death is pending the state medical examiner’s investigation.

This was the second consecutive weekend with fatal car accident in Waterford. Last weekend, a man died in a .
