Weekly Five: Lawsuit, Nuclear Waste, Tax-Free Week

Five Things To Know This Week

1. This Week In Weather: Today, as you may have noticed, is sunny, but you can expect a thunderstorm later tonight. Monday should start foggy but clear up as the day progresses, with a high near 81. Tuesday through Saturday should all be clear with highs around 79. The only exception is Thursday night, when thunderstorms are possible.

2. This Week In Government: First Selectman Dan Steward is attending the ad-hoc Animal Control Facility Study Committee meeting on Monday night. He said this past Tuesday that the town won’t fund a new animal shelter for at least another four years. Committee Co-Chairwoman Margaret Ormond has not said anything publicly since the announcement, saying she will wait until the meeting.

Also Monday, the planning and zoning commission will set the effective date for revisions to the Seaside Preservation District. And on Wednesday, the Nuclear Energy Advisory Council is having a special meeting to discuss the Blue Ribbon Committee Nuclear Waste Disposal Report, meaning it's possible that all the spent nuclear fuel in Millstone One will finally find a home.

3. This Week In Schools: It is the last week of summer vacation before school starts next Tuesday.  Patch will run a back-to-school story, with breakouts for each school, on Monday morning.

Also, the school building committee meets again this week. And again, the group will continue to flesh out its “” with additions to the project.

Most interesting on the agenda is an executive session planned at the beginning of the meeting to discuss pending litigation. The press is not allowed into executive sessions (which are permissible for discussing pending litigation, along with other reasons). But Patch will look into what this pending litigation is, as all court files are public information.

4. This Week In Events: The biggest event is tax-free week, meaning no state tax will be levied on clothes costing under $300. The Crystal Mall is having sales, along with most of the town’s big retailers.

Also, something perhaps only interesting to me: There is a fantasy football symposium all day Saturday at MGM Grand. And for events that, you know, somebody with a life might want to go to, check in Wednesday at 10 a.m. for Healther Caulkins’ family event planner and Thursday at 2 p.m. for Renee Parker’s event planner for adults, such as bar specials, parties and fun events.

5. The Week That Was: Probably the biggest news this week was Steward announcing that the animal shelter will . The animal shelter committee has raised $12,000 in its year of existence and met weekly over that time. The day the news came out, Animal Control Officer Robert Yuchniuk wrote a .

In police news, a 19-year-old on Great Neck Road and then took off, later being arrested for driving under the influence. Also, a man was arrested for trying to .

Finally, Patch looked of elected officials before election season, and a report was given on all the new .
