Update On The Woman Who Fell On The Hill And Sued

Five Things To Know For Tuesday, April 19, 2011

    1.    There is a good chance of rain today and a very high chance of rain tonight, according to the National Weather Service. The high will be 54, according to the service.

    2.    Yesterday, Patch received a phone call from Kelly Reardon of the Reardon Law Firm, which represents Monique Brandle. Brandle last year after she fell on a hill at Leary Park and fractured her ankle.

Reardon called to get Brandle’s side of the story out after reading several negative comments on Patch about the suit. Reardon made the point that there is no clearly marked path to the soccer field, where Brandle’s grandson was playing soccer. Because of this, Brandle slipped on a hill and hurt her ankle.

“It is not a good design,” said Reardon, who said the town should put up a sign or make the path out of gravel or pave it.

Patch visited Leary Park after the call, and there is no clear sign (although there is one in the beginning of the park) and it is not made of gravel or paved. However, the grass path to the soccer field is very clear, a gradual decline next to a much steeper hill.

    3.    Twenty-four residents of Laurelcrest Drive have signed a petition against a proposed development at . The group has complained that building a subdivision there would cause flooding in their homes.

The Conservation Commission will probably have a public hearing on the matter, Conservation Commission Chairman Gary Johnson said. The proposal was submitted two months ago by developer Robert Nauta.

    4.    On Route 1 today, Patch ran into Waterford graduate painting a picture of the New London Coca-Cola building. The company is moving from New London to Waterford, leaving the building empty. Fogg, a graduate of Lyme Art Academy, was painting the picture, which she said should be hung inside the new Waterford building.

    5.    On this date in 1961, the Bay of Pigs invasion ends in Cuban victory, proving to be a massive embarrassment for the Kennedy administration. And on this date in 1971, Charles Manson is sentenced to death for the Sharon Tate murders.
