1. The Week That Was: Well, the theme for this week was really schools and school construction. The and discussed what looks to be its next big decision: deciding if, and then how, to use corporate sponsorships. Some board members argued that corporate sponsorships won’t bring much money and are unethical, while others say they benefit the kids, which is what this is supposed to be all about.

Then, there was the high school project. We wrote about a to the school project on Sept. 15. However, the conservation commission met with school officials on Thursday night, and said the project is .

3. This Week In Schools: Tuesday is the last of the back-to-school nights, as Clark Lane Middle School's is at 6:30. And for high school students, Saturday the SATs are being administered. And Tuesday is the last picture day (at Quaker Hill Elementary School).

Speaking of SATs, this scam warning was put out on Waterford High School’s website:

Please be aware of a possible SCAM that involves the ordering of SAT materials.  A company by the name of Student Services Inc. is calling homes and informing parents that their son/daughter has ordered SAT materials.  They request a credit card to verify payment and deliver. They claim that the student has ordered the materials at a college fair or at school.  This is not true.  The only place to register for SATs would be directly on the College Board website and PSATs are paid directly to Ms. Patterson at WHS.  No materials for SATs have been ordered at WHS or at a college fair. Please do not give out your credit card information!

4. This Week In Government: On Monday night, the ad-hoc animal shelter facility study committee will hear a presentation by Town Zoning Official Michael Glidden on if the new shelter can be built at the old location behind the police department.

On Tuesday, the Democrats caucus and presumably discuss strategy as election season gets closer. And Thursday, the RTM standing committee meets to further discuss the role of the fire director and give some sort of qualifications and job description.

5. This Week In Events: Saturday is a huge day with a ton of great events. At 10 a.m., 14-year-old Natalie Anderson to help the Women’s Center at Civic Triangle Park (the sale was pushed back a week because of rain). Despite being 14, this is the fifth year she is doing this event.

Also Saturday, you can either choose to walk or run for a good cause. The ’s is at 9 a.m. at Harkness Park. And right next to it, at Camp Harkness, is the 34th Annual , which helps people who are challenged in some way. And to top it off, also on Harkness Park at 11:30 a.m., it’s the end of the walk across southeastern Connecticut to help people with breast cancer.

Also today, and Saturday and Sunday the Renaissance Faire in Hebron continues. Today is costume day, Saturday is renew your vows with the Pope day (can anything be more romantic?) and Sunday is the babes in bodices (corsets) contest.

Quote of the Week

“A year ago we were looking into this, and nothing happened, and now we don’t have freshman sports, we don’t have TAG, we don’t have a couple of other things… The corporate sponsor is helping education and helping the students have after-school activities and sports and things like that. There is no way the corporate sponsor is going to tell us what to do or how to do it.”

-Board of Education member Jody Nazarchyk, talking about corporate sponsorships at Thursday’s board meeting as a way to save programs lost in last year’s budget.
