Sniffing Out Trouble At Waterford High

Five Things To Know For Monday, April 25, 2011

1.    Rain is expected today. It should turn into thunderstorms this afternoon and into the night, according to the National Weather Service. Plan on a high of 61, according to the service.

    2.    Recently, Waterford High School Principal Don Macrino, Dean of Students Gene Ryan, Youth Officer Nicole VanOverloop and Police Sergeant Stephen Bellos took a trip to Suffield High School to watch K-9 officers and their dogs perform a sniff search of the building. The idea is to sniff out drugs, along with any other inappropriate substances. The police department and school officials are looking to do sniff searches in Waterford High School.

    3.    The ad-hoc animal control facility study committee will not meet tonight. However, at their last meeting, the group did show a preliminary sketch of the shelter, with 24 dog runs. Designer Paul Provost drew the sketch for free. The point of the sketch is to get an idea of where to put the new animal control shelter. Once the footprint is decided, a proper location can be found, said member Michael Glidden, who works in the town’s planning department. Currently, the committee is planning to use the spot of the current animal control shelter, but it could change if the footprint changes, Glidden said. Meanwhile, the group continues to look for .

    4.    The planning and zoning commission meets tonight at 7 at town hall. The commission has been working on a new plan of development, which is updated about once every 10 years. The group is open to public input, so if anybody wants to help shape how Waterford will evolve over the next decade, feel free to stop by or write a letter.
