Sharing An Ethical Dilemma

Five Things To Know For Thursday, April 7, 2011

1.    It could be wet today, with a 20 percent chance of rain, according to the National Weather Service. The high will be 47, and a low of 36, according to the service.

2.    An ethical dilemma I’ll share with you. Recently, I received from the assessor's office a list of the 10 single-family homes in Waterford with the highest assessments. The list contains the assessment of each home (70 percent of the value), the address and the owner, all public information.

The question is, would you run the list? If not, why? Or, would you run certain parts of the list (maybe take out the owner or part of the address)? Let me know.

3.    The Easter Bunny has found his way to the Crystal Mall, and will be there from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Photo packages start at $21.99.

4.    The zoning board of appeals meets tonight at 6:30, not something of overly high interest. However, Town Assessor Michael Bekech has said more people than ever are fighting their homes' assessments, a good indication that the economy is poor. The last assessment was completed in 2007 at the height of the housing bubble, so the value of many homes is far above what they’d sell for today, Bekech said. The next re-evaluation is set for 2012.

5.    On this date in 1969, the Internet is born. Contrary to popular belief, Al Gore was not the father. And on this date in 2003, American forces take Baghdad as part of the war in Iraq, as Saddam Hussein’s regime would fall two days later.

Quote of the Day

“The most exquisite paradox … as soon as you give it all up, you can have it all. As long as you want power, you can’t have it. The minute you don’t want power, you’ll have more than you ever dreamed possible.”

-Ram Dass
