Daily Five: Snow Plows And Mailboxes

Five Things To Know For Thursday, Feb. 9, 2012

1. Today should be partly sunny, with a high near 46, according to the National Weather Service. Tonight should be clear, with a low around 27, according to the service.

2. Tuesday night, Director Ron Cusano asked the Board of Selectmen to “reinforce the existing policy regarding mailboxes damaged by snowplows,” according to the board’s agenda.

Cusano said mailboxes are occasionally knocked down during plowing. The policy states that if a plow truck hits the mailbox, the town will replace the mailbox, according to Cusano. But if the plow pushes snow into a mailbox and the mailbox breaks, then the town will not replace the mailbox, Cusano said.

The policy is already in place, but Cusano wanted it “reinforced.” Replacing the mailboxes costs time and money, and the public works is short on both, he said.

The Board of Selectmen agreed to table the measure because it was still in the middle of the winter. It is better to wait until spring, after this snow season is over, Selectmen Paul Suprin said.

4. Business owners: at Patch we have a full directory of every business in town, and yet fewer than 10 percent of those businesses have been claimed by their owners. It is a huge advantage for any business to claim their listing for a variety of reasons,, and it is completely free. Most of all, it allows you to have more control and even see the number of people who viewed your page, and could serve as a quasi-website for all businesses who do not have one.

If for whatever reason you can’t find your business in the directory, send me an e-mail at paul.petrone@patch.com.

5. On this date in 1895, William Morgan creates a game called Mintonette. It would later be renamed volleyball. And on this date in 1861, Jefferson Davis is elected president of the Confederate States of America.

Quote of the Day

“From my mother's sleep I fell into the State,
And I hunched in its belly till my wet fur froze.
Six miles from earth, loosed from the dream of life,
I woke to black flak and the nightmare fighters.
When I died they washed me out of the turret with a hose.”

-Randall Jarrell ()
