Five Things To Know For Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2011

1. Today should be sunny and the high will reach 75, according to the National Weather Service. Showers and thunderstorms are possible tonight, with a low around 60, according to the service.

2. Heavy negotiations are ongoing between the superintendent and elected officials and the teachers union over a new teachers contract. The current contract is set to expire at the end of the year, and state law forces the teachers to have a contract after that.

It's been reported that both sides stayed negotiating at town hall through the night Monday as part of mediation. People involved in the negotiations agreed not to discuss it until it was done, so no comment was made on either side.

3. It appears C.J. Fucci is doing a with the town’s orders, Buildings and Grounds Director Jay Miner said. While the firm may not be thrilled over all the new conditions forced upon it after it was , the conditions are being met, Miner said. And it is the job of Miner and O&G Industries, the town-hired project manager, to ensure they are all done, he said.

Substantial work is being done at the new artificial turf football field, Miner said. The goal is to have the field done for the Thanksgiving game against East Lyme, he said.

Still, getting the field done on time isn’t as important as getting the field done correctly, Miner said.

“I want it done right,” he said. “I’ve seen too many times where schedules go against getting it right. I don’t want to do it here.”

4. Once again, Waterford Youth Services is planning to hold a “” event this year. Youth Services Director Dani Gorman has asked anybody who is interested in dancing to contact her at 860-44-5858 or at dgorman@waterfordct.org.

Speaking of Youth Services, the department is still taking applications for seventh- and eighth-graders interested in joining the Justice League. The Justice League is an after-school program that begins Sept. 20. Waterford police officers teach lessons to students and take them on various field trips.
