Daily Five: Netting Around The Lacrosse Field?

Five Things To Know For Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2011

1. Another nice weather day. A high of 76 and sunny expected, according to the National Weather Service. Tonight should be partly cloudy with a low around 65, according to the service.

2. An issue discussed at Tuesday’s building committee meeting: a $65,000 netting system around the lacrosse field to ensure nobody on the track (which circles the field) gets hit by a wayward lacrosse ball.

The $65,000 is for netting all around the field, a feature which most of the committee members agreed wasn't needed. Instead, the group discussed putting nets behind each goal for a cost of $30,000.

Committee member Tom Dembek questioned if even that was necessary. JCJ Architect Greg Smolley said if netting was put up, it would be the first time JCJ did that for a high school, and questioned how often track and lacrosse was going on at the same time.

After the meeting, Waterford High School Principal Don Macrino said so far, nobody has been hit by a lacrosse ball, to his knowledge. But lacrosse balls are hard and having nets behind a goal could prevent somebody in the crowd from getting hit, he said.

The building committee said it would table the decision to the next meeting, when Athletic Director David Sousa could talk about the need.

Greed, in all of its forms; greed for life, for money, for love, knowledge, has marked the upward surge of mankind; and greed, you mark my words, will not only save Teldar Paper, but that other malfunctioning corporation called the U.S.A.”

-Gordon Gekko
