Five Things To Know For Friday, June 17, 2011

1. Thunderstorms and showers are expected today, with a high of 73, according to the National Weather Service. The rain and thunder should continue tonight until 10 p.m., the service said.

2. An interesting part about the first selectman’s position: State statute prohibits the impeachment of a first selectman. Perhaps the most glaring example of the need happened in Stonington, when a first selectman was arrested, and resigned as a way to get a lighter sentence. Theoretically, he could have been in jail and still have been serving as the first selectman.

J.W. “Bill” Sheehan wanted an impeachment policy put in place during Waterford’s last charter change, but was denied by the town because it is against state statute.

The need to have an impeachment process in place grew more important after the town agreed to lengthen the first selectman’s term from , Sheehan said.

First Selectman Dan Steward said he would be on board with an impeachment policy, as long as it had parameters. It should be done if the person does something “inappropriate” or if they just aren’t doing anything, but not just because people don’t like the selectman’s politics, he said.
