Daily Five: Fire Director's First Priority

2. At the Representative Town Meeting's , RTM member Robert Brule asked Fire Services Director Bruce Miller what his top priorities are for the fire services.

Just as some background, for years Miller was the fire administrator, where he was responsible for all the paid firefighters in town. The fire chiefs meanwhile were charged with running the volunteer services, and each fire company had its own budget.

Now, , that There is now just one fire services budget that accommodates the professional firefighters and all five Waterford fire companies, with the new position of fire director having clear control over all of it.

Miller was given the role of fire director in 2011. Brule asked, with the expanded role Miller now has, what he considers his first priority.

Miller said his first priority was getting all the fire companies to work as one team, with one set of standards. He also said he would try to save money for the town through the same method.

3. I know we are the Waterford Patch and one of our main jobs is to watch how Waterford taxpayer dollars are being spent. But Waterford residents pay state taxes too, and I think state taxpayers would be interested in this piece.

4. Tonight, the Conservation Commission begins its deliberations on a plan by Kobyluck Brothers LLC to install The Conservation Commission has held a public hearing on the application for the last two months where commission members asked questions and heard testimony. That public hearing was closed at their last meeting, which began on April 26th and ended on April 27th.

Tonight will be the first time commission members will discuss their views on the project and could rule on the application. The commission has 35 days from April 27th (the date they closed the public hearing), or until June 1, to render a decision.

5. On this date in 1924, J. Edgar Hoover was appointed director of the FBI at age 29. He would hold the position until his death in 1972. And on this date in 1908, Mothers Day is observed for the first time anywhere in the United States, in Grafton, West Virginia.
