1. Today should be sunny, with a high of 80, according to the National Weather Service. Tonight is expected to be clear, with a low of 63, according to the service.

3. Today is first day on the job as principal of Clark Lane Middle School. Sachs is from Berlin, where he served as the assistant principal of Berlin High School. Sachs took over for the retired Michael Lovetere.

4. This week is the first week of the new fiscal year. The first installment of property taxes and motor vehicle taxes is due this month.

5. In 1826, both Thomas Jefferson and John Adams die on this date. The two men, who once hated each other, became friendly later in life. And on this date in 1910, black boxer Jack Johnson knocks out white boxer Jim Jeffries. Jeffries was considered the best white boxer at the time, and when Johnson knocked him out, race riots broke out across the country.
