Daily Five: A Day Filled WIth Events

Five Things To Know For Saturday, Aug. 13, 2011

1.     Today should be sunny with a high around 81, according to the National Weather Service. Tonight could get cloudy, with a low of 64, according to the service.

2.     It is a day chock-full of events. At 8 a.m., the Waterford and East Lyme soccer clubs get together at  Bridebrook Park in Niantic and Spera Field in Waterford to host a 52-team soccer tournament. The Waterford Soccer Club, led by Robert Brule and many others, along with the East Lyme Soccer Club, put this together to have one of the biggest tournaments in southeastern Connecticut right in Waterford and East Lyme, Brule said. All teams are guaranteed three games, and all funds will go toward both towns' clubs, he said.

3.     Pup-stravaganza starts at 10 a.m. at Stenger Farm Park. The event is presented by the Waterford/East Lyme Animal Shelter. Featured will be food, dog costume contests, a police K-9 demonstration and local animal-related business and groups. The event runs until 4 p.m.

4.     Also this afternoon, from 2:30 to 4, Dennis Rodman will be at the Crystal Mall signing 300 autographs. And if you're more of a Yoda person, from 10 to noon, the 501st Star Wars Storm Troopers will be at the mall to pose for pictures.

5.     On this date in 1969, the three astronauts who flew on Apollo 11 (the first mission to the moon) are let out a three-week quarantine and enjoy a parade in their honor. Also, they are given the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Richard Nixon. And on this date in 2008, Michael Phelps becomes the first person to win eight gold medals in one Olympics with his victory in the men’s 200-meter butterfly.
