Daily Five: Police Increasing DUI Patrols For July 4

Five Things To Know For Friday, June 29, 2012

1. Today there is a chance of showers and thunderstorms in the morning, with a high near 88, according to the National Weather Service. Tonight should be partly cloudy, with a low around 64, according to the service.

2. The Waterford Police Department will have extra officers on the road during the “upcoming July 4th holiday period” as part of a nationwide crackdown on drunk driving, according to a press release by Waterford Traffic Officer David Anderson.

Additional officers will be put on duty from 5 p.m. to 4 a.m. for the next few days specifically targeting drunk drivers, according to Anderson. Anderson is encouraging all motorists to voluntarily participate in “safe, responsible motor vehicle operation.”

The enforcement campaign is part of the Federal Highway Safety Program, in accordance with the 2012 Fiscal Year Connecticut Highway Safety Strategic Plan, according to the release.

3. The big news Thursday that mandating people to buy health insurance is constitutional. In a press release following the announcement, Waterford's sole state representative, democrat Betsy Ritter, lauded the decision.

"Words cannot express how delighted and pleased I am by the Supreme
Court's ruling to uphold the Affordable Care Act (ACA)," Ritter said in the release. "We have worked hard to defend all the benefits provided in this landmark law and I am ecstatic to see this historic outcome.

I am pleased that now we can move ahead with the progress that we have already made in our state and the steps we have taken to improve delivery systems. The ruling protects $100 million grant for the state and helps 500,000 Connecticut residents to get better healthcare at optimal cost.

This is a victory for everyone in America and our state. Healthcare is for everyone and I commend the Supreme Court for their wisdom in understanding and preserving this law."

And Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Witness Protection, a movie where Tyler Perry dresses as a grandmother, plays at 4:10, 6:50 and 9:30.
