Daily Five: Waterford On New London

Five Things To Know For Wednesday, April 25, 2012

1. Today, there will likely be isolated showers before 10 a.m., and it should remain cloudy for the rest of the day, according to the National Weather Service. Tonight should be mostly cloudy, with a low around 40, according to the service.

2.  New London Mayor Daryl Finizio has recently proposed cutting New London's K-9 program. In a memo by Finizio, the mayor said New London could rely on other neighboring departments for K-9 services if necessary, according to The Day.

First Selectman Dan Steward reacted to those comments Tuesday. Steward said Waterford would back up New London, as it does now, but it cannot be responsible for replacing New London's K-9 force.

"We will continue to back them up, but for us to become their K-9 force, that can't happen," Steward said. "Our dogs go on a lot of calls in a month. There's no way I can fulfill the mission of a K-9 officer in New London."

Finizio is proposing to cut the K-9 services in New London to save approximately $77,000 and because he said cutting the program would strengthen "the City's commitment to civil rights," according to The Day. Finizio pointed out statistics that show that minorities were bitten by police dogs in 16 out of 18 incidents between 2009 and 2011, according to The Day.

3. The Bulletin ran a very interesting piece Tuesday morning about the Dickie Anderson murder trial. , but the jury was hung on a decision to convict him of the murder of Norwich's Michelle Comeau.

The Bulletin interviewed juror Juanita Zamora about the case. Zamora told The Bulletin just one juror wasn't convinced Anderson murdered Comeau, leading to the hung jury. Zamora told The Bulletin she thought Anderson "got away with one."

4. Monday, the Planning and Zoning Commission agreed to hold the next public hearing on Kobyluck Brothers LLC's proposal at 28 Industrial Drive on May 7.
