Continuing Coverage On The Biggest Story In Waterford

Five Things To Know For Wednesday, April 6, 2011

1.    Today should be ominous, as clouds should grow thicker throughout the day, but ultimately dry, according to the National Weather Service. Tonight the rain will likely come and possibly continue into Thursday, the service predicts.

2.    The biggest news in Waterford is a bill proposed by the state legislature that would increase taxes on Millstone Power Station . Patch has written about this, but will continue to follow the story. Tuesday, for example, Patch asked Town Assessor Michael Bekech the impact this new bill would have on Millstone’s assessment. The income produced by Millstone is a huge factor in determining the value, so if that income goes down substantially because of a new tax, the assessment could arguably go down as well, he said. Millstone alone currently pays 30 percent of Waterford’s property taxes, or roughly $22 million a year.

Also, Dominion has threatened to close the plant, which would drastically reduce the assessment, Bekech said. It would also increase energy costs, as the supply would go down. State legislators have laughed this off, calling it an empty threat. But recently, a high-ranking Dominion official said Millstone is only 5 percent of the company’s total operation, and the company would close it down if it meant operating at a loss. It simply wasn’t worth it, he said.
