Update: 329 Without Power

3 Percent Left Without Power

Updated: With a big push Saturday, only 329 people, or 3 percent of the town, were without power, according to Connecticut Light & Power’s outage map. And while that is a good improvement, it is still not everybody, First Selectman Dan Steward said.

“I only hope it gets lower,” said Steward, who can provide assistance to CL&P, but the restoration really sits in the hands of the utility company.

Town employees, including police, public works and recreation and parks, continue to work overtime as the cleanup continue, Steward said. In an earlier interview, Steward said it would probably take a month for all the clean up to be complete from Tropical Storm Irene.

Meanwhile, the distribution center at the public works building, which was handing out water, ice and food, has been closed, and so has the community center, which was offering showers and a place to charge electronics and go on the computer. If there is a big need for any of those services, it will be reopened, Steward said.

“If there is a real need, will do it,” he said. “Will do whatever we need to do to help people.”

The town had extra food, water and ice, which it gave to communities that still have large amounts of people without power, such as Salem and Ledyard, Steward said.
