A New Day At Waterford Patch

Five Things To Know For Wednesday, May 4, 2011

1.    Showers are expected this afternoon, and will likely continue into the night, according to the National Weather Service. A high of 61 and a low of 41, according to the service.

    2.    Waterford Patch’s new will begin to show up today, as I get them set up. I would like to stress again that some of the blog posts are purely informational (such as the town departments), while others invite conversation.     3.    Tuesday, there was a mercury leak at the Visiting Nurse Association building, according to Jordan fire officials. A blood pressure machine broke and began leaking mercury, fire officials said. A person there took the machine up an elevator to another floor to show somebody else, further contaminating the building, fire officials said. The Waterford Fire Service, along with several other groups, responded to the scene, evacuated everybody, cleaned the mess and then the building was reopened, fire officials said.

    4.    There are early childhood screenings today at both Great Neck Elementary School and Quaker Hill Elementary School, for 3- and 4-year-olds. All screenings are an hour, people should call the school to make an appointment.

    5.    One this date in 1970, the Ohio National Guard opens fire on a group of unarmed anti-Vietnam protestors at Kent State University. Four students are killed and another nine are injured. And on this date in 1998, Ted “The Unabomber” Kaczynski is sentenced to four consecutive life sentences.
