London Burns Through Bracelets, Helps Animals

Some have complained that the downtrodden economy has made anything nearly impossible to sell. Perhaps they should take advice from London Sylvia.

Sylvia, a fifth grader,  made 80 bracelets out of different colored yarn to sell at the Great Neck Elementary School store. On Friday, she set up her stand, and before she knew it, all of them were gone.

“We put out the bracelets first thing in the morning and after 10 minutes, they were all were gone,” Sylvia said.

“Some of her friends were on the later buses and they didn’t get to buy any because they were gone when they got there,” her mother Mandy Sylvia said. “They were disappointed.”

The money, a total of $90 because some were willing to pay more than the $1 price, was not just going to line London’s piggy bank. Instead, she will donate it to the fundraising efforts for a .

“It is in desperate need of repair,” Mandy Sylvia said. “We need a new shelter.”

Of course, she’s not going to stop at $90. London is currently producing another 100 to 150 more bracelets, and plans to sell them again the next time the school store is open, on April 8.

“We are rushing to get them done,” Mandy Sylvia said.

Then, London will give all the money to the animal shelter. Any student (or parent) interested in donating to the cause, or just buying a bracelet, should bring $1 or more to Great Neck Elementary School.

Anybody else interested in donating to the new animal shelter can write a check to “Town of Waterford” and can deliver it to either the animal control shelter, the police station or town hall. All donations are tax deductible.
