Waterford’s New Tenants: New London Dogs

The Waterford-East Lyme Animal Shelter has some new tenants, the stray dogs of New London.

Last week, the shelter started being used as New London’s temporary animal shelter as well, according to Waterford-East Lyme Animal Control Officer Robert Yuchniuk. Waterford Police Lt. Brett Mahoney, who runs Waterford's animal control division, said the New London pound is still broken and the city was using Waterford’s shelter, for now.

Mahoney said that he was not sure how long New London would use the shelter. Meanwhile, First Selectman Dan Steward, who was not aware that New London was using Waterford’s shelter until Patch told him, said it was good, as the towns are looking to work together on animal control.

Recently, Montville Mayor Ron McDaniel said that Montville, New London, Waterford, East Lyme and Old Lyme were all exploring the idea of one regional animal shelter. Steward said he hopes such regionalization would save money and provide better service. McDaniel said the shelter would most likely be built in Waterford.

New London’s Pound?

New London’s animal shelter was heavily damaged during Superstorm Sandy, as a tree fell on top of it. The city was originally using Montville to house its animals, but now is using Waterford’s shelter. The New London shelter has not yet been repaired.
