Daily Five: Waterford School Board Increases Lunch Prices

Five things to know for Monday, April 22, 2013.

1. Happy Earth Day! Earth Day was first celebrated in 1970, and now is celebrated in 192 countries every year.  

As far as the weather, today should be sunny, with a high around 52, according to the National Weather Service. Tonight there is a 40 percent chance of showers, with a low around 40, according to the service.

2. Thursday night, Waterford’s Board of Education unanimously voted to increase the price of breakfasts and lunches at Waterford’s schools to comply with state law.

The board voted to increase the cost of school lunches, school breakfasts and adult meals by $0.25 and to increase the cost of milk, when bought separately, by $0.10. Milk will now cost $0.60, and lunches will costs $2.50 for elementary students and $2.75 for middle school and high school students.

The increase brings Waterford's prices right around the state average, according to a letter by Superintendent Jerome Belair. The increase is to comply with a section of the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act, according to Belair. 

3. Also at the Board of Education meeting Thursday night, four high school students who took a 12-day school trip to China talked about their experience.

The four students stayed with host families and visited Weihai, Beijing and the Great Wall of China, among other places. The students were accompanied by Waterford High Guidance Counselor Yuan-Yuan Chen and School Psychologist Peter Hunt.

The kids all reported having a great time and commented on the many differences between Waterford and China. For example, kids go to school from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. in China, and then are given three hours of homework a night, according to the students. 

4. Tonight, the Planning and Zoning Commission meets at 7 in Town Hall. The meeting is open to the public.
