Daily Five: Longtime Waterford Elected Official Dies

Five things to know for Tuesday, April 30, 2013.

1. Today should be mostly sunny, with a high around 62, according to the National Weather Service. Tonight should be partly cloudy, with a low around 42, according to the service.

2. George Kee, a longtime Waterford elected official and a World War II veteran, died on Friday.

Kee was a longtime member of the Waterford Board of Finance and most recently served on a subcommittee of the finance board. He was well-known for his time in Waterford politics for his fiscal restraint. 

Kee worked as an engineer at Electric Boat in Groton and served in the Army during World War II, according to this obituary. He is survived by his wife, Mary Kee. 

3. A proposal by Gov. Dannel Malloy to eliminate the property tax on vehicles with assessed values below $20,000 has been scrapped by the state legislature, which was good news to First Selectman Dan Steward.

The tax would have cost the town $3.9 million in property taxes, and would have just meant that property owners and businesses would have paid more, according to a previous interview with Steward. He said he was happy the proposal is gone, saying it removes some uncertainly from the budget process.  

4. This evening from 6 to 8 at the Waterford Public Library, there is a henna class. Participants will learn about henna and then create their own piece.  

The class is limited to 15 people. Registration is required, call the library at (860) 444-5805 for more information.

5. On this date in 1993, tennis player Monica Seles was stabbed by an obsessed fan during a professional tennis match. And on this date in 1803, the United States purchased the Louisiana Territory from France for $15 million, which more than doubled the size of the country.
