only $5.5mill? that's a drop in the bucket for the payola the staff, admin and operating costs…Read More these business operations consume of taxpayer funds. despite the increase in tuitions, they still manage to put up full page ads, glitzy brochures to attract prospective students. "more, more, more" seems to be the buzz words these places revolve around. should spend more time studying and teaching than complaining, complaining, complaining.....

Actually, Quaker Hill School was rebuilt. The original plan was to renovate as new but the old…Read More structure was not sound and had to be torn down. The new Quaker Hill School was built to look just like the old school even though it is new. The Friendship School was completely paid for by the State so all the state taxpayers contributed to its construction, not just Waterford. The state does pay for around thirty percent of the Waterford School Construction through bonding.

Wendy Mo, you didn't see a lot of teachers possibly because the event was held on a Saturday and…Read More from what I understand, a lot of the teachers had just spent their vacation week two weeks before packing and unpacking at the new building. That's not much of a vacation! Then you expect them to come in on a Saturday too?! The teachers have done a fabulous job transitioning into the new building and helping the students with the transition as well. Job well done, Waterford High teachers! Welcome to your new building!

I thought the school was beautiful. I would have liked to see the cafeteria a little larger and the…Read More library maybe a little smaller. A lot of empty bookshelves in the library but clearly it was gorgeous. I disagree with the color comment above, only because I feel that if there were blue and white all over the place, it wouldn't be nearly as attractive. Didn't see a lot of teachers, however the one teacher I did see was Mr. Cheney who was doing a Promethean Board demo. (Mr. Cheney... one of the best, hardest, but most loved teachers that WHS has who they are letting go at the end of the year... very sad.)

The full extent of my remarks compared Connecticut to other states that do not have these…Read More restrictions on when a graduation date may be set. In addition, many other states do not require high school seniors to attend the full complement of school days and lastly my main issue was that Waterford waited an additional 18 days to announce the graduation date when it should have been announced on April 1.

I understand the snow day thing, but most people I know put in for vacation dates in January for the…Read More entire year. Why not just set the date a few days or a week after the proposed date of finals and if there are a few days between graduation and finals - oh well.

Whatever spin you want to put on it. There is room in this budget for further reduction AND KEEP…Read More THE SAME SERVICES AS PROPOSED. I woud urge the RTM to move a for a further reduction of this budget. The motion I made at the BOF to reduce this budget by $75,000 failed in a tie. The BOE budget itself failed on a tie vote before a member switched his vote at the last minute. Maybe the RTM can eek out a reduction by with a one vote margin. Be bold, the taxpayers deserve it.

It’s great to hear that everyone is willing to compromise. The Ad Hoc Animal Control Facility…Read More Study Committee has lowered their expectations on the facility… Mr. Steward is willing to budge on his time frame. I am happy as a donor to know that my money will be going towards a new facility and not just a Band-Aid. This is clearly something that town residents feel passionate about. Keep the donations coming and let’s get this facility built!!!

While I applaud any move to get the administration to finally indicate that they may be willing to…Read More take any meaningful action, I will refrain from getting too excited until I see some meaningful action. The Animal Shelter committee has done an outstanding job in their fundraising and I applaud them!
I would like to clarify the statement pertaining to me. As the primary petitioner of the committee being formed and its chair in 2010 and 2011, I created a regional subcommittee chaired by Dianne Amburn. Its purpose was to research the state's existing regional shelters and we subsequently met with representatives from New London on three occasions. True regional shelters are run by a regional board which makes the policies and determines funding. On committee tours, we heard that the most successful efforts were among similar municipalities and that is why our longtime pairing with East Lyme has been so successful.
At the time of our discussions in 2011, the committee did not get the feeling that New London truly understood the concept. It was more like they would be renting space and making their own policies relative to euthanasia which, at that time, did not conform with the surrounding towns.
I am hopeful now though, that there may be a different spirit of cooperation and understanding of what it would take to have a good regional effort and that we could finally have a successful effort with all our neighboring towns. The need is there! Let's get moving now!

There are a lot of great things happening at CLMS. Keep up the good work!

Studies show that, on average, people watch a video online for less than 10 seconds before clicking…Read More away. So I'm honored you lasted that long ;).

This is a great opportunity for both the students and the school system. The State Department of…Read More Education states in their Standards for School Leaders that, "The school leader collaborates with staff to create and sustain a variety of opportunities for parent and community participation in the life of the school." From what I understand, the Board of Education was already discussing student involvement as a goal for this year. Students SHOULD be more involved in the discussions pertaining to the decision making process. Bravo to Josh Kelly!

I have heard of students performing in this capacity in some towns and I understand that they were…Read More able to provide valuable input. If the board of education researches this topic, they might start with the State board of education. As an educator and administrator in the Connecticut Technical High School System, I remember that there were two students chosen as student representation and I recall that it was rather successful. Good luck, Waterford Board and petitioning students!

Isn't it great that our school can't properly punctuate its sentences?

Signing a "commitment" is a joke! "The Problem" is Waterford is not facing the…Read More reality. People want free pre-school or any pre-school reasonable price and close. The fact they bus is even better. There is absolutely no reason the Friendship School should have Kindergarten program...whether state mandated or whatever the reason. It could be opened up to so many more families as a pre-school and cut out the Kindergarten nonsense. Every grammar school already has K through 5, including the Magnet schools in this area.

I don't think anyone thinks it's "Free Money" of course there's no such thing. The fact…Read More is, money has been allocated and people, businesses and towns apply for the program. The money will be spent on "clean energy" regardless of who gets it---so, I say good job for Waterford for getting it. It does save Waterford taxpayers money. What is so hard to understand? If you don't like paying the surcharge (on your electric bill) then get the heck off the grid, plain and simple!
Michael March 30, 2013 at 03:14 pm
A surcharge on Connecticut ratepayers' utility bills provides the funding for the Connecticut Clean…Read More Energy Fund. So to say this is no cost to Waterford taxpayers is a misrepresentation of the facts. Surcharges on our utility bills fund this for Waterford and every other city and town in Connecticut.

ron, thanks for mentioning that little future pension/retirement/handout expense. i forgot about…Read More that minor detail, as if it could be swept beneath the 'carpet of ignorance' that occludes so much enlightenment around here.
these 'heads' are so narrowly on their own domain they incrementally sacrifice the whole for their personal little power trips.
