alan, surely you are not in the dark on this? this is the way the politics work, appropriate moneyRead More for a study, then another, and maybe a few more, at a few milllion $$ per (for some cozy politically connected consulting firm), then spend some travel money shuttling to and fro about the lower 48 states, wandering around looking for a good site, (hence, ignore all those expensive studies), then appropriate a few more million to purchase a mountain in some far away remote place, well isolated from current human intrusions. then spend a few billion coring a hole so deep it seems like another "money hole". tack on the contractors vast overrun charges and then when it's 99 percent done, CANCEL the thing! this has nothing to do with safety, keeping old used up nuke fuel idle until they can re-package it for some other purpose, it has to do with the ego of a few ignorant politicians with no moral fiber to do whats right for the ENTIRE country.

It is nice to see that our estimable junior Senator has a healthy grasp on this issue. Perhaps heRead More should talk to Senate Majority Leader Reid and find out why the nuclear waste repository that has already been built in Nevada was shut down by Senator Reid. Since we have already spent the money to build the facility, why do we need a bill to create a facility?

mr. courtney is a puppet of the democratic administration with socialistic idealogy concerning theRead More economy and national security. how about rescinding the dodd /frank act for a start. how about these two wonderful congressman who should be investigated for fraud and mismanagement of public funds, as noted by mr. frank's operational tactics involving fannie mae/freddy mac loans which led to the breakdown of the economic system in loans forced upon banks( with the help of former president clinton), and now, regulations by the dodd/frank act which will put out of business many small and medium size banks. how about stopping deficit spending, and , least of all, how about having an energy policy drilling for oil and using natural gas here. lets not talk about funding green energy companies with tax payers money that end of going bankrupt. the govt. shoud not be speculating in the market. that's it, and i worked for the federal govt. for 20 years, and it is out of control with the govt. controlling everything , especially the health care debacle on the horizon. those are substantive issues affecting the economy, mr. courtney.

Joe: Rather than praising more submarine contracts, please consider doing what you were elected toRead More do and investigate why we didn't protect our Seals and ambassador in Benghazi, and why we are wire tapping the Associated Press, and why we are allowing the IRS to politically punish select groups to benefit your party. You along with all silent democrats and your control of the media apparatus are contrary to ethical and responsible government. Please write an article here in the Patch and show what you have said on the issues of Benghazi, wire tapping the press, and IRS abuse of power. To date I cannot find one word from you on these subjects rather than "thumbs up". Please consider our country first as you pledged to do as an elected official and maintain your zeal for your political party second.

It is educational to compare L+M, Backus, and Westerly Hospital rates. It appears that most of theRead More charges are within $3,000 of each other and the same hospital is not consistenly the least expensive. The other interesting data is the comparison of the charge with what was actually paid by the insurance companies or Medicare.

Big corporations look at things such as highways systems to move materials and products. On thisRead More criteria CT ranks last with I-95, a 2 lane highway built in the 1950's for 1940 traffic. CT rail system moves at 50 mph with the Acela the biggest fraud ever put on taxpayers with billions in subsidies every year and service declining every year. Add to that the ugliest railroad catery electrification system in the world, with decaying galvanized poles every 100 ' along the once scenic waterfront. Companies care about fuel costs and on this measure CT is again last in the nation with the highest gas taxes and highest electric rates made even higher by the State government which levies additional taxes on electricity. Also big companies look at the wages of the workforce in which they compete. Because CT has mature industries and pays State employees at the highest wage structure in the world, coupled with housing costs and property taxes at the highest end in America for homes built in the 1870's to 1960's, new company employees can never compete against mature company employees and state workers for decent homes. Also companies look at taxes on businesses and business equipment...CT ranks among the worse in America. However the worst thing facing CT and something that cannot ever be corrected because of the largeness of the Democratic Party voting block, is a State government and its elected officials totally believing that taxation and over regulations is the optimum solution to not being able to control costs and expenditures. The companies that already are in CT will most likely stay until they lose a competitive advantage with their products, and when this happens the companies have to search on how to cut costs to stay competitive. That is when they will come to the obvious conclusion that it is untenable to stay in a state that has a future only in the past.

Entrepreneurs here and in other States pay attention to signals like how easily CT enacted theRead More recent overly strict and heavily controversial gun legislation that many legislators didn't even read before voting. Irresponsible governance is one of many detriments for growth.

Speaking of the Barn the owners should be paying a little attention to this great landmark. YearsRead More back Miss MacKenzie was forced to take the original barn down due to its condition. The exisiting barn looks to be in pretty bad shape also. The new owners could at least put a door on the 2nd floor facing the Bay. Where is that town official now?
Ron May 10, 2013 at 09:27 pm
Daniella: You are correct. Those 3 year old children on their 3 wheel bikes laughing and makingRead More all kind of unwanted noise are not acceptable. As to millions of dollars spent on environmental studies, RT 11 alone has spent more money on these studies in the last 40 years than the Yucca Flats nuclear fuel repository. Currently the observation of a jack rabbit near the proposed Route 11 road to nowhere will hold up this unnecessary road until another $ 200 million is spent on 25 more years of study. I hope you are not suggesting or implying a worm, moth, or butterfly is on the Rope Ferry Road proposed building site. If so please keep this confidential so the developer can spent $ 500,000 on legal fees before the project is rejected. Remember Calamari's junk yard in New London. The State paid him $ 5,000,000 for the property and another 5 million to "clean it" so Pfizer could build on the land. Hopefully we can get the State to do environmental studies on the Rope Ferry Rope property along with Waterford's review(s). After all the 100 million dollar estimate initially given to clean the Norwich Hospital site made it so much more desirable to interested developers and look how nice that property looks now with all the development that has taken place on it. Are you really serious there could be a worm on the Rope Ferry Road property ?

nice chunk of property, dead end road, low traffic, some noisy trucks, but a nice area. right closeRead More to schools, shopping, library, town hall. this could be the new 'core' of the future City of Waterford, (in 100 years maybe) welcome to the ingress of population, new faces, lots of cars, maybe Ol man Sullivan will open up a glitzy spread of sheet metal and plastic hybrid vehicles for sale too. (Maybe at the old drive in property?) Ahhhhhh, progress such a wonderful thing! There's NO ESCAPING IT!

The Mike's Famous H-D in Delaware has changed its name to "Rommel H-D" because Rommel isRead More the owner of the company. I don't know if Mike Schwartz is the original "Mike's Famous."
Dave Sunshine May 13, 2013 at 10:21 am
The Mike's Famous in Delaware is always busy and does a good business there. Here's hoping they areRead More able to make NL their new home!

Any noise will be during working hours - they close by 6:00 pm Tuesday-Saturday and by 4:00 onRead More Sunday. I believe there are enough local bikers who will appreciate the convenience of New London versus Groton. And I for one (NOT a H-D owner) seek out H-D shops in other towns just for the fun of seeing all the bikes and clothing and getting a window sticker!!

Daniella Ruiz May 4, 2013 at 04:49 pm
they will go bankrupt, offload the unpaid burden onto, ummmm lets say, their creditors? and pop upRead More under another 'business name' (wife, new partner, etc) and go merrily along their way. or some scheming CPA will 'forward' the loss into the next few years 'gains', cry poor, get sympathy from the stupid legal idiots (usually in cahoots with the ?CPA?) and pay off the debt at 5 percent per year, against (umm more future gains?) What's business in Mohegan Lake NY doing in CT? sound really fishy to me.
Ron May 4, 2013 at 08:34 am
While this seems like a huge amount of money if they paid the $ 24 million it would be only be 1Read More percent of the $ 2.4 billion Molloy hands out to State Union retirees annually. This shows how anemic any tax collection from the private sector is in combating the huge pensions guaranteed for life for the Strate union. CT's top 10 State pensions alone equal 10 % of this total tax amount. Luckily a good majority of CT state workers take their pensions to other states when they retiree because even with their enormous pensions they cannot pay CT taxes for State retirees when they themselves are in retirement

This seems rather absurd. I'm sure the responsibility for collecting this fee will fall to theRead More vendors, who will tack on a little more fee for having to bring the thing to the proper landfill for disposal. It's okay, I'll just drive to RI to buy my mattress and dump the old one on the side of the CT street. RI obviously wants my business more than CT does.
Ron May 4, 2013 at 08:59 am
I think CT should tax the bedspread, the pillows, the sheets, and the bedside alarm clock forRead More disposal along with the mattress. Why not tax real garbage for disposal. I think a tax of $ 1 for each curbside garbage can picked up by the sanitation department each week would help CT to continue to spend money. How much taxes are we getting from Jackson Labs after giving them 300 million dollars for the zero jobs they will produce before joining Solyndra in going bankrupt ?
Teresa Schlotman Wilensky May 4, 2013 at 08:33 am
I'm pretty sure making things more expensive in Connecticut is exactly the way to improve theRead More economy here. It certainly makes Connecticut a more desirable place to live. All in all, I think we should add a tax to everything in Connecticut, oh wait, we already do. Even this Democrat is finding it difficult to understand what the good folks in our state government are possibly thinking.

Paul Petrone (Editor) April 26, 2013 at 10:24 am
Well it has been cut in-half, and the grocery stores that came before it took the entire space. IRead More guess a grocery store could move in, but I would say it is probably too small now. Maybe a specialty grocery store or some other outlet. I'm sure Big Y weighed that decision though. Obviously, they probably wanted to lease out the entire space, but they held the property for more than a year. Perhaps they assumed that they would rather get something than nothing, although now they have to find another tenant.
