Waterford High School Boys Basketball Team Throws Out First Pitch

The sun shined, two champions were honored, volunteers were recognized and a former player gone too soon was mourned at Waterford North Little League’s opening day ceremony Saturday at Quaker Hill Elementary School.

Greg Gwudz and members of the Waterford High School basketball team, who , threw out the first pitch. Also, members of the Waterford North Little League team that won the 2011 Connecticut District 10 9-and-10-year-old softball championship were given their trophies.

At the ceremony, there was a moment of silence for Stirling Danskin, a 20-year-old Waterford High School graduate . Danskin was a 2004 graduate of Waterford Little League North, according to league commissioner Ray Laforte.

First Selectman Dan Steward gave a speech at the ceremony as well. Steward thanked the many volunteers who run the league.

“Everything that happens in this league is volunteerism,” Steward said.

The ceremony was highlighted by Vanessa Gumbs, who brought down the house with her rendition of the national anthem.
