Sports Report: The Spring Season Begins

Baseball, Softball, Men's Tennis Team All Start Undefeated

First off, we just want to introduce you to our new weekly column, the sports report. In this piece, which will run Wednesday’s at 2 p.m., we will give updates on all the local sports teams.

April has begun, meaning the new spring sports season has begun as well. The Waterford High School baseball team started the season strong on Monday, defeating Fitch 6-1 at home. Nolan Long, led the team to victory by pitching six innings, striking out 11 and allowing just one unearned run, according to The Day. The team plays again today at East Lyme at 3:45 p.m.

Waterford High School’s softball team started the season strong as well, already running off to a 3-0 record. The lady Lancers defeated Lyman Memorial at Lyman Memorial, 9-0, and beat Coginchaug, 13-2, and Fitch, 6-3, at home. The girls’ team plays East Lyme next as well at 11 a.m. Thursday.

The Waterford boys’ lacrosse team is 2-1, defeating Fitch 9-6 and Old Saybrook 14-5, but then lost to NFA at home on Tuesday, 6-8. The won its first game of the season against Wheeler, 19-7, but dropped the next two to Fitch, 16-18, and NFA, 14-15.

In the world of high school tennis, the lady Lancers are 1-1, after losing to Stonington 5-2 and then defeating Windham 7-0. Then men’s team meanwhile has played the same two schools, defeating both of them to start the season 2-0.
