Sports Report: State Tournament Season Begins

Several Waterford Teams In State Tournament

The regular season has ended for all Waterford High School’s spring sports teams and so have the Eastern Connecticut Conference championships. Waterford High can proudly say for the fourth year in a row, meaning seniors on the team have known nothing but ECC glory.

But now, it is time for the state championship. And almost all of Waterford’s teams have qualified for their respective tournaments.

Starting with the champion lady Lancers (19-1), they are ranked second in the Division M state tournament. The team got a bye in the first round, and will take on 18th-seeded North Branford (14-7) today at 4 in Waterford.

The Waterford baseball team also had a strong season, running off an 18-3 record in the regular season, earning them a fourth-seed in the Division L state tournament. The Lancers easily defeated 29th-ranked Platt in the first round, 19-1, and will take on 20th-seeded Foran (12-9) today at 3:30 in Waterford.

The Waterford boys’ lacrosse team (10-6) earned a 10th seed in the Division M state tournament, and will play seventh-ranked Guilford in Guilford tonight at 7. The girls’ lacrosse team (8-7) earned a 13th-seed in the Division S state tournament this year, and will play fourth-seeded Stonington (12-4) in Stonington today at 5.

In the Class S girls state tournament, the Waterford High School team lost in the first round to Stonington, 5-2. Meanwhile Waterford’s Alan Luner, Dana Aing and Matthew Getty have all qualified for the men’s singles Division M tournament.
