It has been a tough year for Waterford schools.

Facing a $1.6 million increase in health insurance costs, the Board of Education was forced to slash , , two bus runs and . Simply put, it was the worst budget year anybody can ever remember for the town, according to people who have been involved in the Waterford School District for their entire adult life.

Patch could help. The company is holding a contest to find the best decorated home in the Patch network (more than 800 sites). What does the winner get? One hundred thousand dollars for that town’s, in this case Waterford’s, school district.

That’s right, $100,000. A huge amount of money. When Patch e-mailed Board of Education member Jody Nazarchyk about it, she could barely contain herself.

“If we win we could reinstate freshman sports and after-school activities in the schools,” Nazarchyk said in an e-mail. “I think I’m going to go out and buy more lights this weekend!”

How To Play

Beginning today at 9 a.m. (Dec. 8) and continuing through Dec. 26, you can nominate your home by uploading a photo to the contest entry form on the site. During that same time period you and your neighbors will also be able to vote for your favorite festive home. The winning entry will be forwarded to a national Patch judge that will select 24 finalists. Each finalist will receive $500 that they can apply to their December electric bill.

From Dec. 30 through Jan. 8 you will be able to vote for the Best Decked House in all of Patch. The grand prize winner’s school district will receive a $100,000 check from Patch.
