VIDEO: Waterford's First Day Of School

A look at the first day of school at Oswegatchie, Great Neck and Quaker Hill Elementary.

Wednesday was the first day of school at all five Waterford schools, and there were plenty of sights to see.

There was Waterford High School Principal Don Macrino greeting a group of five freshmen, who won a radio contest and took a limo to their first day of high school. There was the indomitable Oswegatchie Principal Nancy Macione, who – after spending a night in the emergency room – overcame a heavily-taped foot and a fire drill 10 minutes after all the kids got into school and still had a safe first day.

But most of all, it was about people like Jennifer Turck and Carmine Micech. Wednesday was Micech’s first day of kindergarten, and at around 3 p.m., Turck was waiting outside Quaker Hill Elementary School, curious how her only son’s first day went.

“It happened very fast,” said Turck, referring to her son being old enough to go to kindergarten. “But we were ready.”
