ProStart Fundraiser at Filomena's

On April 9, 2012, Filomena’s Restaurant will host a fundraiser to support the ProStart Culinary team from Waterford High School.  Filomena’s will offer a pre-fixe menu for $25 per person, plus tax and gratuity, at two seatings, 5:30 and 7:30 pm.  A portion of the proceeds will be donated directly to the ProStart team to help cover their costs of traveling to the National ProStart Invitational.  Please make reservations by calling Filomena’s, 860-437-1010.

The team of five won the Connecticut ProStart Invitational on February 3 and now goes on to the National ProStart Invitational in Baltimore, Maryland April 27th –April 29th and will compete against 40 other states. Students will be competing for thousands of dollars in scholarship money to post-secondary culinary institutions.

ProStart is the career-building program sponsored by the National Restaurant Association and Connecticut Restaurant Association for high school students who are interested in culinary arts, restaurant and foodservice management. ProStart is an exciting two-year program where students study in the classroom, participate in mentored work experiences, and test their skills in local and national competitions. Most importantly, ProStart students grow into the leaders the restaurant industry needs.

From 2011 to 2021, the number of jobs in the restaurant and foodservice industry are projected to increase by 3.1 million. That includes 11 % growth in chefs and head cooks and 8% growth in management positions. ProStart is currently working for approximately 90,000 student participants in more than 1,700 schools, across 47 states.

The Connecticut Restaurant Association speaks for nearly 600 hospitality professionals who serve their guests in over 1,000 locations throughout Connecticut.
