Rep. Betsy Ritter Appointed Deputy House Speaker

The Democrat that represents Waterford and part of Montville will now be second in charge of the State House of Representatives.

State Representative Betsy Ritter (D-Waterford, Montville) has been asked by Speaker of the House Brendan Sharkey (D-Hamden) to serve as his Deputy Speaker, the person who presides over the House of Representatives when Rep. Sharkey is not in the chamber.

“I am deeply honored that Speaker Sharkey has asked me to be a part of his leadership team,” Rep. Ritter said. “We will be facing unprecedented fiscal issues as well as other challenges during the legislative session and I am looking forward to doing everything I can to help Speaker Sharkey and the legislature to succeed.”

When the Speaker of the House is absent from the chamber, the Deputy Speaker presides over the House of Representatives, recognizes all members wishing to speak to the chamber, puts all questions to vote and directs legislation to the proper committees.

“I am excited to have Rep. Ritter join my leadership team as we begin work on the many challenges facing our state,” Speaker Sharkey said. “Betsy will serve our caucus well in her new position and will bring a strong work ethic to the speaker's office.”

Rep. Ritter will also serve as a member of the legislature's Appropriations, Human Services and Energy and Technology committees.
