More Trash Talk

Montville Town Council member Dana McFee broached an idea that has folks talking

In a blog posting here on the Montville Patch, Town Councilor Dana McFee wrote about his ideas for town-wide trash pick-up.

Town Council Chairwoman Candy Buebendorf, Public Works Director Donald Bourdeau and Mayor Ron McDaniel gave their points of view in a story this week on Patch, as did many readers!

Even more spoke up on the Montville Patch Facebook page:

Tina Capici Trotochaud said: We prefer taking our own garbage to the transfer station.

Mark Trotochaud: Prefer the transfer station. Hate the windblown garbage and cans in the street. Keep it as it is. Buy the pass or contract for pick up.

So you're basing your costs on speculation and what other towns are doing? I would need more information before I would jump on your bandwagon.

If you had a solid bid from a trash hauler and the transfer station stayed open for everything else count me in.

I agree with you, Elizabeth.I assume Mr. McFee meant there were 6000 households who would pay $100. What about the multifamily homes and businesses? Anecdotal stories and other town comparisons are good for starting the conversation, but facts are needed to make informed decisions before a referendum. Perhaps the Solid Waste Committee or Public Works already has a cost analysis. If so, perhaps it should be made public. This is not a new subject. It came up many years ago and may have been considered then. Roadside pickup sounds wonderful, but where I live there is no place to leave trash to be picked up roadside. Should this be implemented I have visions of knocked over bins and the need to replace them periodically.

All commercial waste and multifamily waste is covered under the solid waste ordinance that says they will provide their own trash removial. Does not come into play with this change

Mr. McFee’s proposal this time is more marketable then his first proposal. I did not agree with his first idea, but I like this idea because it mirrors the town of Ledyard’s trash plan and it’s working for them, why not try it in Montville? Curb side Garbage pickup and curbside Recycle pickup and we’re going to save money, whats wrong with that idea? You try it and if it doesn’t work we can always go back to the old way. How do you find out if it’s going to work, if you don’t try it? Unfortunately for Mr. McFee his idea will never get support from the Democrats on the Council. It’s starting already by whats being written by Democrats or their supporters. Democrats on the council won’t support the idea because it might be a benefit to the town.
