Plan Eliminates 6,466 Positions Total

Gov. Dannel Malloy has released his plan to balance the budget, which cuts 6,466 state positions and will lay off 5,466 people.

Of the 6,466 positions, 1,000 are vacant, according to a press release from the governor’s office. The remaining 5,466 positions will be vacated via layoffs.

The department with the most position reductions is the Department of Corrections, which will lose 1,019 positions. The complete proposal is attached.

The governor was forced to close a $1.6 billion budget gap after state employee unions rejected wage and benefit concessions. The original budget was passed with the assumption the unions would agree to the concessions.

The plan also cuts municipal aid by 2.4 percent. Patch will work on a complete story of what that would mean to Waterford tomorrow.
