Gun Owners' Names, Addresses Could Become Public

A West Haven lawmaker has introduced a bill to make public the names of some 170,000 gun owners in Connecticut.

If you own a gun in this state your name and address could become public under a bill introduced in the General Assembly by State Rep. Stephen D. Dargan, D-West Haven.

Dargan filed the proposal in response to the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown that killed 20 children and 6 women on Dec. 14. His proposal would overturn a law passed in Connecticut 20 years ago that keeps private the names and addresses of gun owners.

In an interview with the Hartford Courant, Dargan said he wants gun ownership information to fall under the state's Freedom of Information Act in part so that parents can know whether the parents of their child's friends have guns in their homes.

"Maybe their kids are going over to Johnny Smith's, and maybe they want to see whether they have guns in the house," he told the newspaper.

Dargan's proposal follows another bill that was filed recently that seeks to limit who can own gun ammunition in Connecticut and to keep such ammunition out of the hands of felons. Gun control issues are expected to dominate the General Assembly's winter session, which formally begins next week, in the wake of the Newtown massacre.

Robert Heinritz on comments by Judge Sotomayor. "I don’t much care for the bother and responsibility of securing a firearm nearby. But I’ve lived long enough to know the world sometimes presents threats that justify its presence. A free person’s right to defend his or her life is a very personal right, a "fundamental right" – pre-existing our U.S. Constitution – which is more important than our property, our ability to speak-out on political issues, our right to vote, or our rights to a Miranda warning when approached by a police officer. Throughout history this has always been true among free people." "During the years American Colonists were bickering with Great Britain over taxes, representation, and rights; the one thing that finally provoked a shooting-war with their mother-country was Britain’s use of armed soldiers to disarm free citizens. The Founders were well-read on history and the classics, and well-acquainted with what England did to it’s "subjects" in Ireland; first disarming them, taking over all their lands and resources by force of British arms, and consigning the Irish to virtual serfdom or slavery. The most loyal of America’s Founders knew that government’s disarming of its free-citizens was the first step to slavery. "Slavery" was the word they used. History has confirmed this basic truth countless times in countless countries over the succeeding 200 years. Free, law-abiding citizens do not give up their right to arms."

So if you are an active or retired police or corrections officer the convicts and ex-convicts will now know where you and your family reside. Very clever.!!!

Looks like every legislator in this state is looking to come up with a new gun related law so that they can say "me too, look what I did" a election time. If my name ends up on a visable list and someone breaks into my house and steals all my weapons am I going to be held accountable for the liability of the thief's future actions. You bet I am if the other accountability laws get passed. What if a group of Adam Lanza's get the list and decide that they want to build themselves an arsenal which they use on their fellow school mates? Suppose a couple of people get killed in their beds during these plunders? Hey, Mr. Dargen have you even researched as to why that law was enacted in the first place, I bet there's a darn good reason. Like the Right to Privacy guaranteed by the the Constitution or maybe even simpler, someone got someone's name of a list laying around and went after their possesions. Use some common sense Sir, they tell you not to put your TV box out for trash pickup because it invites thieves to target your house and you want to provide them a list of were the guns are. And just what part of the Sandy Hook shooting would this law address. Not a single thing. I guess all you need to do is just preface your proposal with Sandy Hook nowadays.

I just noticed that their are 170,000 gun owners in the state of Connecitcut. We as one of them, I starting my own list as should the 169,999 other owners. This list is going to have every single legislators name on it that proposed, proposes or gets one of these stupid half-witted suggestions passed into law. So, when election time comes we can remember them by voting agains each and every one of them. As I remember nobody wins in this sate by a 170,000 vote majority and if they all go the other way next election the term "landslide" won't fit the event. November is only a few months away.
