Despite Cancer, McGuirk Keeps Giving Back - And You Should Too

Brendan McGuirk is running again for the Representative Town Meeting and hopes other people at least take the time to vote.

Brendan McGuirk, a longtime firefighter from New London and a longtime Representative Town Meeting member, was one of two candidates standing outside Town Hall at 11:30 this morning, holding up a sign.

McGuirk has been fighting cancer recently and is currently confined to a wheelchair but still plans on serving on the RTM. Not that it should be much a surprise, as he's volunteered in one form or another since he's been born.

"I believe in giving back," McGuirk said. "I've given back to the community my entire life. I believe in the community spirit."

McGuirk was hoping to see a good turnout in Waterford for the municipal elections, but it appears that won't be the case. For him, he can't understand why people don't vote.

"It is their given right," McGuirk said, when asked why people should vote. "They should enjoy it and you can't do it anywhere else. It is your chance to come out on something that really affects you on a local level."
