Connecticut Budget Crisis Could 'Devastate' Towns

Town leaders at a meeting this week said they're worried the deepening budget problems, which include a growing deficit that is expected to balloon to more than $1 billion next year, will mean cuts in town aid.

Town leaders are beginning to fret about Connecticut's growing budget problems, raising concerns that the growing deficit - now projected to balloon to more than $1 billion next year - could mean reductions in town aid that the state makes each year to Connecticut's 169 towns.

In a meeting Thursday of the Housatonic Valley Council of towns, municipal leaders learned that the measures being considered by Gov. Dannel P. Malloy to balance the budget could bring steep cuts in state municipal aid, according to the News Times of Danbury.

Most towns in Connecticut each get tens of millions in education and road funds from the state each year and town leaders for years have complained that cutbacks in that aid have already strained local budgets and have forced higher local property taxes. Any additional cuts would be devastating to local communities and could result in layoffs in local school systems, the News Times quoted local leaders as saying.

Waterford is in better shape than other towns, as it relies far less on state and federal funding than other municipalities.

I almost don't even care anymore....this state made it's bed last election. Waterford gets very little (relatively speaking) from the state anyway. Our states taxes will just increased to help other poorly managed towns out (hint, we are right next to one). This state (and the nation) is kind of like having an alcoholic friend who, despite all your efforts to help, is intent on self-distruction. At some point you just have to step back and let them hit rock bottom and hope they live through it. So, what ever...let it burn. The sooner the better now, get it over so those still around can start rebuilding from what is left from the ashes. This is what happens when you elect and re-elect the class clown's instead of the class nerds. Short term it's fun...then reality sets in and the class clown isn't so funny anymore.

I agree. The democrats are in charge. This is what the people of CT want. When they run out of money and there is nothing left to tax the layoffs will begin. Maybe after all the services stop, the teachers are all fired and the roads crumble some lesson will be learned. Who cares anymore anyway.
