Community Center Open Until 8 Tonight

Now, Around 200 Homes Without Power

The Waterford Community Center will be open until 8 tonight, for people to take showers, charge electronics and use the computer, First Selectman Dan Steward said.

Currently, around 200 people are without power, Steward said. Crews are currently working on Old Mill Road and Douglas Lane. Also, individual houses or a pairs of houses without power are scattered around town, he said.

Meeting With Malloy

Earlier today, Steward met with Gov. Dannel Malloy in Montville, where the public was invited. Steward said the reception wasn’t nearly as negative as Malloy’s stop in Ledyard earlier in the week, and the governor was proactive in addressing the crowd.

“He’s pretty much on board that it’s not the people working on the ground, it’s management,” Steward said, referring to Connecticut Light & Power. “He’s looking at what’s the plan, what’s the overall structure, how are you going to work with this?”

Steward himself has yet to strongly criticize CL&P, saying he isn’t in a position to judge them. He did say though, just from his own observation, that the trees were allowed to grow too tall near the power lines.

“They need to trim back on the high end,” Steward said. “You have trees that need to have their tops taken out.”
