Waterford Firefighters Help A Little Dog In Deep Trouble

It took a blow torch and a ladder to do it, but a little Yorkie was safely retrieved from a storm drain on Wednesday night.

Wednesday evening, Waterford firefighters were called to help rescue a tiny dog that got into deep trouble. Shortly before 6 p.m., Waterford Animal Control Officer Robert Yuchniuk was called to help retrieve a Yorkie that had fallen about eight feet into a storm drain at the Mobile station on Hartford Turnpike by Crystal Mall.

To complicate the matter further, ice had frozen the storm drain in place. That's where the fire department comes in. Yuchniuk said Cohanzie Fire Department responded to the call for assistance. Fire fighters were able to melt the ice with a blow torch, then one of the smaller fire fighters used a short ladder to reach the dog.

Yuchniuk said the dog was uninjured and reunited with his owner, who had been waiting anxiously at the gas station during the rescue mission. "She was in a bit of a panic," Yuchniuk said. Both are doing fine now.
