State Police Report Three Fatalities Over Memorial Day Weekend

Connecticut State Troopers reported 281 accidents, including 59 with injuries and two fatalities on state roads over the holiday weekend. Connecticut DEEP EnCon Police also responded to a fatal accident at Salmon River State Forest on Monday.

According to the Connecticut State Police, over the course of the Memorial Day weekend from May 24 to 27: 

  • There were 281 motor vehicle accidents on state roads, including 59 with injuries. Two people were killed in accidents, one in West Hartford and one in North Stonington.
  • Troopers arrested 57 people on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs 
  • Troopers issued 4,294 hazardous moving violations, 1,941 speeding violations, and  718 seat belt violations.
Colchester Woman Killed By Falling Tree In Salmon River State Forest

Connecticut’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) Environmental Conservation (EnCon) Police today released the name of the woman fatally injured Monday when she was apparently killed by a falling tree. 

Barbara Young from Pickerel Lake Road, Colchester, age 45 (DOB – 5/14/1996) was fatally injured along the Salmon River in the Salmon River State Forest, East Hampton. Her daughter, Jessica Surratt, age 18 (DOB 6/12/1994), also from Pickerel Lake Road, Colchester was also injured and taken to Hartford Hospital with a leg injury. Her son Kevin Surratt, also from Pickerel Lake Road, Colchester, age 22 (DOB – 5/23/1991) was not injured.

What Happened? 

On Monday, May 27, 2013 at approximately 1:30 p.m., Ms. Young and her two children walked to the bank of the Salmon River. Within several minutes of their arrival, the incident occurred, killing Ms. Young and injuring her daughter.  Several nearby fishermen assisted until Emergency Medical Services arrived. The fatally-injured woman was pronounced dead at the scene. DEEP EnCon Police are conducting the investigation with the assistance of Connecticut State Police and local police.
