The Board of Selectmen made the first meaningful cuts during budget reviews Tuesday night, carving roughly $75,000 from next year’s to keep the department’s increase below 2 percent.
Police Chief Murray Pendleton originally proposed a $5.07 million police budget for the 2012-13 year, a 3.22 percent increase over last year. But facing pressure to lower his budget, Pendleton “fell on his own sword,” and proposed cutting another $75,000 from the budget to bring the total to $4.99 million, up 1.68 percent from this year’s $4.91 million total.
Pendleton said he would defer hiring another police officer until the summer of 2013. He also said he would spend $20,000 less on gasoline next year.
