Report: Sandy Hook School Shooter Conducted Years of Research

Connecticut State Police call the leak by an unidentified law enforcement official "unfortunate."

A New York newspaper's startling revelation Monday about the Sandy Hook School shooter's highly planned plot to kill prompted a quick response from Connecticut State Police.

The leak, from an unnamed veteran law enforcement official, served as the basis for an article Monday in the New York Daily News. The source reportedly attended the recent International Association of Police Chiefs conference, during which Connecticut State Police Col. Danny Stebbins spoke about the Dec. 14 shooting in Newtown, Conn.

Lt. J. Paul Vance, Connecticut State Police spokesman, called the leak "unfortunate."

The article quoted a source on specific, previously undisclosed findings of the investigation into the shooting that claimed the life of 20 first-grade students and six educators. Specifically, the source referred to a "sickeningly thorough ... spreadsheet" that the 20-year-old shooter had reportedly compiled over several years, in which he "graded" previous school shootings.

"The recent seminar during which the Newtown case was discussed was designed for law enforcement professionals only," Vance said. "Following each tragic mass murder incident in this country it is customary for law enforcement to share their lessons learned from the investigation so that other law enforcement agencies can learn."

Vance says Connecticut State Police policy asks that information not be released until victims' families have been notified.

"The families of the victims continue to be a priority in this investigation and this fact was clearly stated at the seminar," Vance said. "It is unfortunate that someone in attendance chose not to honor Colonel Stebbins' request to respect the families' right to know specifics of the investigation first."

Vance said police are not releasing any new information at this time, and that a final report on their investigation is still several months away.

The media needs to stop turning the physco paths into celebrities every time a shooting takes place. There is no need to run 24/7 coverage of these events and turn these demented people into household names. It's sick. In Adams mind mass shooters where stars, and the news gave him access.

What about the parents rights to see their dead children? For some reason they were all ok with the government officials telling them no and identifying their children only through pictures. This whole case has so many holes and a lot of media/government driven disinformation and straight lies. I have yet to see one physical hole form a bullet, broken glass, blood, body, etc.

While I agree with Justin, I am glad to see this information released. This info proves that you can not legislate agianst a madman. Taking the guns away from the law abiding is not a solution to this crime. I read the Sandy Hook Commision report and am amazed that there are no provisions for the mentally ill. Nothing to keep track of the violent, medicated, and sometimes disjointed citizenry of this state. If you give up liberty for security, you deserve niether.

ummm, maybe those 20 children were taken for special training, and some dead look a likes were brought in to appease the parents grieving? they used a tactical team to blast away inside the school and smeared blood about?
paaahhhleeeeeez! the police are containing the entire scene to ensure as unbiased an investigation as they can. in depth analysis of what happened is added to the database these professionals use to do predictive behavior studies of people, allowing them a full set of 'tools' to detect persons of interest, even those who seem ok.

I wholeheartedly agree with you Peter Volkmar!!

If there really are "spreadsheets" i don't see what damage it would to do to release them to the public. The more information we have; the more likely we will be able to prevent future occurences. I don't think it's necessary to release pictures of the scene of the crime, but it would be interesting to hear from Adam Lanza's father and brother- was Adam bullied in the schoolyard as a boy? What caused the breakup of the family? Is it possible his mother was in on the plot? etc.
