A frantic five-hour search Thursday night for a missing 6-year-old boy ended in tragedy, as divers recovered his body just after 11 p.m., according to New London police.

Anthony Bernoudy, who would have turned 7 on July 10, was pulled from the water by a diver "a short distance from the beach" and taken to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A silver alert for the child had gone out at about 6 p.m., after his family reported him missing. Police said he had been at Toby May Park on Ocean Ave.

Police and fire search and rescue dive teams from several local fire departments and the Connecticut State Police Emergency Services Unit helped. Police conducted a land search of the beach and adjacent properties, two officers from East Lyme and one from Waterford joined the search with the regional police boat, while rescue divers performed underwater searches at the beach area.
