A 7-year-old is helping make his street a little safer — and it all started with a hand-written letter to the local police department.

The boy, Isaiah McLoughlin, wrote the Waterford Police Department to tell them the cars and trucks speeding by his bus stop every morning made him feel unsafe. He gave them his address and phone number and asked that they get in touch to talk about it.

The next day, a Waterford police officer went to the boy's house, took his complaint, and arranged for the department to conduct speed patrols on his road the following day.

"We thought it was pretty great that this young kid would write his local police," the Waterford Police Department wrote on its Facebook page.

"I'm glad the WPD took his letter seriously and that his parents are bringing him up right," Carole Baier wrote in a comment on the WPD's page. "It's important that everyone's concerns are heard and respected."

Great Job. I pray, as you grow older you continue to take the correct way to solve a problem. We all need people like you. You are an inspiration to us all. Thank you.

I live down by the Niantic River area; they speed along the Avenues and the Niantic River Road as well.

agreed, great prospects for Isaiaha! forget the speed, all it will take is a distracted driver to swerve into the shoulder, then into the child and real tragedy happens! it all happens in an instant, when people least expect it! parents need to tell their children to stay well off the roadway, as the real bus drivers will slow down to look for them, wait and load them safely! sidewalks are only a 5 inch jump up for 28 inch wheels!
