WHS Music Department Pops Concert

The 2013-2014 year for the Music Department was topped off with their annual Pops Concert. It took place on June 3. Each music group performed one modern pop song and then received awards from their directors.

Mr. Fioravanti’s Symphonic Band kicked off the evening with “The Beatles Remembered.” The order was haphazardly carried out, as awards were sometimes given out before performing and some were distributed after performing, but the night remained interesting for this reason. The combined Concert Choir and Chamber Choir sang “Joy to the World,” the combined String Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra played another Beatles medley, and the Jazz Ensemble finished the night with an arrangement of “Forget You.”

Each music group member was given an award specific to the number of years each member was in the band. One award was given to the most helpful member and another award was given to the most improved member of each group.

Andrew Impelliteri, sophomore, earned the Most Improved award for the Jazz Ensemble. This was his first year playing the bass with the ensemble. “I enjoyed jazz because it is much different music than the orchestral music,” Impelliteri said. “Jazz allows the player a lot more freedom and ability to improvise.” He has been a member of the Chamber Orchestra since freshman year.

Ian Sajkowitz, senior, earned the Most Contributed Award for the Symphonic band. “I was very excited and surprised to receive the award,” Sajkowitz stated. “I practiced consistently on Fridays after school, since I wasn’t able to practice at home. My constant effort made Mr. F. think that I deserve the award.” He did not expect to get any form of honor for his practicing, but it did provide an exciting end to his last year in band.

The Pops Concert is an exciting way for the students to end their school year and to put their last effort into their musical performance.
