WHS Jazz at Festivals

The Waterford High School Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Choir both performed in Boston at the Berklee College of Music High School Jazz Festival on February 8th for the fourth year. Hundreds of jazz groups from all over the country presented their talents and schools.

In the Jazz Ensemble, senior Connor Megan received the Judge’s Choice Award for his performance on trumpet. Senior Noah Todd was also awarded for his performance in the Jazz Choir. Both groups were praised for their uniform sound and variety in the type of songs. Mr. Fioravanti, the music director for both groups, was proud of his students for their hard work and success.

For a number of students, it was the first time they performed at the festival. Performing for the judges, who are professors at the college, was a unique experience that can trigger a greater desire to excel at music. We spent the entire day at the Hynes Convention Center, right next door to the Prudential Center. It was important for the students to keep track of the time before and after the performances when they were exploring the centers.

The following week, the Jazz Ensemble performed at the Manchester Jazz Festival in Manchester, CT. It is a smaller festival with 18 groups participating this year. One student from each school who stands out gets an award. Senior Nathaniel Ross received the award for his outstanding performance, both with a piano and a vocal solo.
